The word menopause simply means your last period. It is an inevitable part of being female. There are different ways in which the menopause can occur. The natural menopause is the most common and in the UK its occurs on average at age 51. It is a gradual process that occurs over several years. The ovaries slowly stop producing eggs and this results in a decline in the production of the hormones oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone until periods stop altogether.
The symptoms of the menopause can begin several years before your periods stop. The time leading up to the menopause is called the Perimenopause. On average it starts around the age of 45 and often lasts for around 4 years. However in some cases it can last for up to 10 years.
If the menopause occurs before age 45 is it referred to as Early menopause. If it occurs before age 40 it is referred to as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency.
